Theme & Program
Post-Colonialism & Industrialization- Industrial Heritage of Others
We use the term 'post-colonial', to cover all the culture affected by the imperial process from the moment of colonization to the present day. Since the beginning of industrialisation the development of more and more new industries has changed the urban and rural landscapes all over the world. The process of birth, growth and decline of such industries is even more dramatic and fast coursed by the colonization from the West to the world. It is still visible not only in the remaining industrial monuments; it is also alive in the structure of an artificial landscape which was formed over centuries by industrial activities and the development of technical infrastructure. Thus, as the first TICCIH conference held in Asia, we would like to explore the industrial heritage in relation to the Post-colonialism. To see the industrial heritage of others from various point of view and seeking for the solution of the massive industrial impact on landscape in the present day.
In the west, ‘regeneration through heritage’ has a long development since 1960s. In Asia, it is a relatively new concept for the urban and regional development. Different attitudes toward postcolonialism also has effected on the life of industrial heritage and social development of society. In addition, there are also some countries just start their industrialization. Therefore, it is also the time to review the industrial heritage development and look for a dynamitic and sustainable development of industrial world in the future.
The congress theme ‘Post-Colonialism & Industrialization- Industrial Heritage of Others’ is aiming at these close connections between historical, political, racial, environmental, economical, technical, and social questions of industrial heritage in our modern world. It should be a forum of presentation and discussion of these problems and of realized, actual and planned projects and concepts for the solution of this problems. Therefore the congress and its planned sessions should be open for participants from all scientific and administrative fields and institutions which are dealing with historical, political, ecological, economical and heritage problems of industrial monuments and industrial landscapes. The key-sessions and sub-sessions will be defined later.
Four keynote speakers from Europe and Asia will open the conference. Their papers will give an introduction and overview to the general topics of the main theme of the congress. Beyond that the conference will be open for free organized sections (3 to 5 papers) and for poster sessions for the presentation of the results of new research and development projects in this field. The poster sections also possibly exhibit together with a brief introduction of some industrial heritage sites of Asia.
In addition to the conference program, a program of congress excursion and post-conference excursions are planned. The congress excursion will bring participants visit Taichung Creative and Cultural Park (a reused winery), Changhwa fan-shape railway workshop and Xihu sugar factory during the congress. The optional post-congress excursions will bring participants either visit the industrial heritage of Southern Taiwan about sugar factories, salt field and museum, steel factory, and yacht marking factory or the industrial heritage of Northern Taiwan about mining sites (Gold Ecological Park, Jingtong Mining Industry Museum and Taiwan Coal Mine Museum), water supply system (Taipei Water Park), railway workshops and so on. Several social events are planned during the congress and will be defined later. Some of the sites information are available on the website of TICCIH under Taiwan.
