One day Workshop, GIS for IA: An introduction to Geographic Information Systems
This one day workshop at Brown University will explore the power and potential of GIS as a tool for the investigation and analysis of IA topics. A geographic information system, or GIS, is a computer-based technology designed for storing, displaying, and analyzing spatial data. It allows the user to answer questions about places by arranging and displaying data as computer maps, tables, images, and graphs. GIS has many potential applications for IA. It can be used to map and analyze data collected at a site, to integrate historic data and aerial photography, to analyze change over time at a specific place, or to explore the relationship between industrial sites and other variables such as environmental, transportation, or demographic data.

Participants in this hands-on workshop will receive guided practice in basic GIS skills such as displaying and classifying spatial data, integrating digital orthophotographs with other kinds of data, formatting field-collected data for display in a GIS, and displaying CAD files in a GIS environment. In addition to offering GIS training, four instructors will provide supplemental GIS resources, demonstrate successful applications of GIS for IA, and answer individual questions that arise in the course of the day. This training event, which will take place in Brown’s best-equipped GIS lab, is limited to ten participants. Because the workshop is intended as an introduction to GIS, no previous experience with this technology is necessary.

Fee: $150. Lunch will be provided. Please register for the GIS course by checking the appropriate boxes on the Conference Registration form. The GIS course will be held at Brown University's MacMillan Hall, room 214. Transportation will be available.
