The City of Superior, WI, was awarded $3,000 to help fund a Historic Structures Report (HSR) for the S.S. Meteor, the last remaining of the whaleback freighters.  The ship was launched in 1896 and was designed and built by Captain Alexander McDougall.  According to the grant application, “the unique design, including a round, cigar-shaped hull and snout-like bow was built for efficiency and stability.  In addition, the steel-hulled whalebacks were less expensive to build and operate and carried significantly more cargo than their massive wooden contemporaries.” The HSR will not only provide historic data on the vessel but will evaluate its condition and provide recommendations to restore and preserve the vessel for the long-term.  The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a co-sponsor of the project with the city.
The Friends of the East Broad Top (EBT) will receive $3,000 to hire an historic architect to assemble materials for a HAER documentation of the EBT Railroad’s Coles Station Water Tank in Huntington County, PA, located within the EBT National Historic Landmark boundary.  This water tank is last one of many enclosed water stations that once stood along the EBT line.  The water towers, which provided water for the steam locomotives, were enclosed to prevent freezing.  The documentation will be submitted to the Library of Congress to be deposited with existing HAER materials on the EBT.
The Niagara Power Trail Project, sponsored by the City of Niagara Falls, NY, will use the $3,000 awarded by the SIA to research and produce a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Multiple Property Listing for the Niagara Power Trail.  Over 100 years of hydro-electric power history occurred in the Niagara Falls area and much of that history can be seen on the landscape.  NRHP nominations will be prepared for four individual sites as well.  A tour of “Power Trail” will be designed as part of the overall project.
National History Day – Alaska was the recipient of $3,000 to aid in the preservation and dissemination of the Kennecott Copper Corporation, Alaska archives.  The materials date from circa 1915 – 1937.  The National Park Service is a co-sponsor of this project and currently houses the archives in their Alaska Regional Office.  The project will organize, catalog, microfilm and provide digital access to the data through a dedicated website.
The SIA board approved a $1,067.50 grant to the Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society, Inc. Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society requested funding to conduct photo documentation of the 1905 Great Northern Business Car A-22, built in the railroad's St. Paul shops for Louis Hill. The documentation will become part of the society's archival record and will be used in the formulation of restoration and interpretation plans for the car.
The board approved grants of $2,500 to the Heritage Conservation Network/Francis  Mill Preservation Society. The Francis Mill Preservation Society (FMPS) is working with the Heritage Conservation Network (a non-profit group that runs hands-on workshops) to restore a c. 1887 water-powered gristmill in Waynesville, NC. The mill was in danger of collapse in 2003 when emergency stabilization of the structure took place. Through a series of workshops, the society will not only restore the mill but also teach volunteers about historic construction techniques. FMPS plans to restore the mill and its original equipment to working order and provide access to students and the general public for educational purposes.
The board approved $3,000 to the Western Reserve Historical Society. Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, OH) will use the giant to help match a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to catalog and preserve the records of the LTV Steel Corporation and its predecessors. The records span a 150-year history that ended in 2002 with the company's closing.  Once the material is processed, it will be distributed to repositories appropriate for the collection's "geographic scope," which included steel mills, mines, and shipping facilities throughout much of the Midwest and portions of the Atlantic coast. The collection consists of 3,800 cubic ft. of documents, audio and videotapes and photographs. Upon completion, a catalog of the collection will be posted on the Internet.
A grant of $1,375 has been awarded to the Montague Association for the Restoration of Community History (MARCH) and $1,377 has been awarded to the Schoharie River Center. MARCH will use the funding to conduct research and prepare a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Registration Form to expand the existing Millville Historic & Archaeological District in Montague Township, Sussex County, NJ. The district is listed in the NRHP and is in the New Jersey State Register as well. Millville is a small 19th-century industrial hamlet containing several buildings, structures, and sites. The proposed expansion is to include resources associated with the district such as the mill's water-power systems and the farmsteads of former mill owners. MARCH is a local non-profit historical society. Professional support will be provided Dennis Bertland Assoc. and Richard Veit [SIA], winner of the SIA's 2003 Vogel Prize. The Schoharie River Center proposes to use the SIA grant to conduct an archeological and educational outreach program focusing on the industrial heritage of the village of Burtonville, Montgomery County, NY. The investigation features several l9th-century mill sites on the Schoharie Creek. Students from local schools will participate fully in recording archeological data and arriving at conclusions about water-power management and the historical landscape of the village in its industrial prime. Public dissemination of the results will take the form of school and library presentations, articles, and papers. This is the second year that students between the ages of eight and thirteen will be able to participate. Professional archeological support will be provided by Hartgen Archaeological Assoc. The Schoharie River Center is a non-profit organization.
