The St. Paul Hotel opened on April 18, 1910 and has hosted guests such as James. J. Hill (builder of the Great Northern Railway), Charles Lindberg, Lawrence Welk, Gene Autry, and John F. Kennedy. Beginning in the 1950s as people moved from the city to the suburbs, the hotel fell into disrepair. In 1982 the community of St. Paul realized the importance of the St. Paul Hotel and began a complete restoration. Today the St. Paul is not only a local landmark, but also a AAA Four Diamond Award winner and recipient of the Conde’ Nast Travelers Gold List.

The St. Paul Hotel has two restaurants; the M-Street Café and the St. Paul Grill. The M-Street is open for breakfast, has great food and is competitively priced. The St. Paul Grill has award-winning food and has been featured in The New York Times, Gourmet Magazine, and Wine Spectator. The St. Paul Grill bar annually receives the “Best Bar” award and is renowned for its selection of Scotches, Whiskeys and Cognacs.

The area surrounding the St. Paul Hotel is known as St. Paul’s theater district. It is home to the Fitzgerald Theater (Prairie Home Companion), Landmark Center which is the former Federal Court House and Post Office (built in 1902), the James J. Hill Reference Library, and Mickey’s Diner. The hotel is adjacent to Rice Park and within walking distance or a short ride from the Science Museum of Minnesota, Minnesota Historical Society, Minnesota Capitol, unique shops, restaurants, bars and museums.
